Ryne SANDberg got the game off to a positive start with a first inning, lead-off homer to give the Cubbies a quick 1-0 lead. They added two more in the seventh when Keith Moreland also went deep with the bases empty and then Jody Davis scored on a Rick Mahler balk.
Meanwhile, the Braves couldn't get anything going against Scott SANDerson. He went eight strong innings, only giving up four hits and a walk. Chicago tacked on two more in the ninth and Lee Smith finished the game for the North Side.
